Hi Gavin, I would like to know if the expression out of the blue is used in USA and how to use it. Many thanks.

Hi Ana, "Out of the blue" is an idiom which means "out of nowhere" or even for us in Brazil, something that is unexpected or that happens suddenly. A good translation for us would be: "do nada". See some examples: 1. That car just came out of blue and almost crashed me. 2. They appeared at my house totally out of the blue. This expression isn't formal English, though. Dalane

Dalane But in the music "Hey hey, my my" the translation for "out of the blue and into the black" is "Fora do azul e dentro do preto". Nesse caso, não podemos considerar a expressão "do nada"?

"Out of the blue and into the black" é uma frase que significa sair de uma situação ruim e cair em outra muito pior.

Fábio, achei bem engraçada a tua resposta! Aí dei uma 'googleada' nisso e achei esta pérola:
When you leave a bad situation, only to stumble into one much worse. Derived from Neil Young's song 'Hey Hey, My My'. "I never should have left school, things just went out of the blue and into the black."
Uma música de 1979! Será que é isso mesmo? Se for, é mais um daqueles casos em que a cultura pop adiciona expressões na língua! Bem legal isso.

É possível, Marcos. A língua é uma coisa muito dinâmica.
